Noting like seeing big men get together & take out there aggression with each other in a positive way - oh yes I meant on the field too...but...when there is a home game, this place has the tendency to become a "ghost town". met an inspiring person today in Earth Alley. they're visiting her son's host family in Japan & wanted hand selected gifts. Not only did it bring back memories of my exchange experience in Denmark but we had a great conversation about her ideas of trying a new career, really about forging a new path in stimulating brain activity. I LOVE meeting women who dare. It seems that the most devastating outcome of this economy has brought fear to us about pursuing our dreams.

He is an amalgam of so many. He talked to us for an hour at an event we had a promotional table, mostly about his daughter who'd love to work at Earth Alley. She's green, really green. Two months passed, he came in recenltly, I'm not sure why. spend a long time telling me that he doesn't shop. but said I was a good salesperson, then left with no objects. I guess I am not as good a salesperson as he is a chatter. Reminds me of the guy last time who came in to chat while his wife went to church for over an hour.

So here is the small shop owners dilemma: to close or not to close? One asks, "is there is hot chance in hell people will shop today?" Buttttttt...there is a chance! At 105 degrees, 1 sale at 12 noon, dizzy from the heat, I gave up. Hampden looked deserted as if everyone boycotted walking. I know I did. And, it is on these days that I wish I were working for someone, anyone else who will pay the ac, the electric bills and the upteen bills that keep this place going.

How am I sitting here again sitting contemplating closing the shop? Is there collective button pushed -NO MORE SHOPPING? I distinctly remember last year there were specific days, weeks yeah even months where the memo read cease & desist all spending immediately but go shopping anyways, torture small shops with as many question as humanly possible. Here we are again with no real warning. Can it be an additional spike in the sucky economy? Two weeks ago people loved Earth Alley & the next day, nope, no can do, nada! My spirits like the local flora in this brutal heat wave seems to be withering.

Yesterday we had a display table at the farmers market, Tues. a professional networking with a display table, Wed. a charitable gig & Thurs. another display table at NIH then Fri. evening Mama's Mexican Mojito Happy Hour here followed by Sat.'s table at Cylburn Arboretum and Sun. at Annapolis' new green festival. What the $%&^&*( was I thinking. We eco retailers got to get the word out. I do love going to these event because for the most part, people are friendly and appreciative.

This year's no exception! I've met really cool people here in Earth Alley. Like just before closing on X-mas eve., this talented comic book artist, John, zoomed for gifts for his sister. She's been working hard writing her 1st children's novel. As he put it, "we're tight".

Another young guy with the coolist southern drawl, Curtis, stopped in, maybe for the the 3rd time, to get his dad's girlfriend who he hadn't met yet a unique gift & of course another for his really sweet wife who took a leave of absence to go to Tanzania to volunteer in an orphanage for a month. And, Beth & Bill whose children were so smart for their young years. These are just a few from the past few days.

This weekend was fun. Every time I start to take my life too seriously is when I know I need a break. Thanks to my friend, Kris, Earth Alley was taken care for a while.

The simplicity of being waited on at a healthy restaurant (Sage in Clarksville). What I remember was the the falling yellows, oranges, and reds summoned to make a winter blanket for the earth, the faint scent of horses, the few pine tress ringing back memories of Lincoln Pk and how they gave some protection from the drizzle from the Seattle sky as my sweet dog Damascus, who has since passed, ran like he was intoxicated from the earths smells.

I read today in "Fast Company" Nov. 2009 editon. Noreena Hertz the economist who won the heart of Bono and who predicted the credit crisis. Now that the crisis is a reality businesses, governments & NGOs are listening to her. - She is calling for a new type of business model, coined "co-op capitalism" which takes both profit and social goals in mind.

I so am jazzed about this idea because I started Earth Alley based on this principle. for at least 1 night anyways! Ray La Montagne & the BSO tugged at my heart & made me want to believe in life, love and the power of song again. "Jolene" still brings me to tears after 5 years. Remember seeing him in Seattle a few years back, he was so shy , still is... BSO as back up, simply brilliant. Ray's lyrics still make me cry even as I was buying his latest CD. check out what the sun said... To think this man who was near homeless, living out of this car playing at these out of the way Maine bars, discovered by a fluke...(and Maine hole-in-the-wall bars are really scary)

Visit Earth Alley during Green Week at one of the largest eco and fair trade expos in the country. Eva, the owner of Earth Alley, has been asked to share on a panel!!!

The Green Festival is a project of two non- profit organizations, Green America and Global Exchange. The festiva is coming back for its sixth year! Featuring 150 speakers and performers, 400 exhibits, live music, great food, kids' activities and more. The Green Festival is a celebration of what's working in our communities across DC, Maryland, and Virginia. Eva will be on a panel of 3 eco bus owners in DC, Sun October 11th. at 12 noon.

We put a little can to help out a pooch in need and in just 2 weeks Earth Alley customers left $18.00 I was amazed at people's generosity. I mean August is one of the slowest months and still...Baltimore's ASPCA and Earth Alley thank all of you for helping!

OK this isn't an ASPCA animal but my little 17 pound cat who thinks he's a dog sometimes. We don't think of him as a rescue not after 13 years - he'd pee on my shoes if I did... and you think I am kidding.

Shopping for South American Products was Crazy Fun!

Wow, just back 2 weeks from Otavalo, Ecuador and I am so pleased with customer's reaction to South American items I picked. I was so concerned with native Tagua seed jewelery, aka vegetable ivory, because of its boldness in color and actual size but women have been loving it. As well, the Peruvian flutes and silver have been greeted warmly. All and all, it was great!

Bird Bath Transformation!

So I was working on a completely bare metallic bird bath with no adornments or anything. With some broken up tiles (which you can do placing colorful tiles in a pillowcase and throwing them on the ground, hand clasped firmly on the end of the pillowcase obviously) I used a special glue and made my very own "colorful and interesting" bird bath!

This Saturday we are going to have another one of our worm demonstrations at 3-4 pm. We've had worms for over 10 years now starting in grad school in Albuquerque, here in Baltimore & in Seattle. Clean, affordable and easy, they make such great organic soil! Come join the fun!

Why am I a general worry monger - do you inherent that? After a week of fender benders, subsequent doctor visits & a untimely burglary I was asking what else can go wrong during Mercury's retrograde?

And I held on...Yesterday two good friends, one old friend, Sarah, who has been a supporter of Earth Alley from the beginning visited, a new friend Michelle also came in with good cheer & a good friend from Seattle called. 'Tis The Season

Wow, I am EXHAUSTED - 8 events, 1 each day for over a week. I didn't even unpack my Earth Alley samples. There were a times when I wasn't sure where I was going. Then I am made a complete ass of myself!

So why did my sweet husband laugh at me for about an hour? After one long intense day at an event, I was driving home and noticed all AND every car whizzing by me on the highway. I looked down to see the speed odometer read over 100. I called my husband crying: it finally happened - I was losing my mind. I was really spooked when a ghostlike old guy gave me the dirtiest look I had ever seen when leaving the exit ramp. 2 days later and after almost committing myself, I realized that I switched the odometer to kimometers. Dah$#%%&&&* - and I lived in Europe.

What come of it...Well...I made up for all the over-spending I did for the store this fall during the retail economy melt-down, I was interviewed for a spot on comcast on-demand's local channel (coming out in late Jan.) & I got a glimpse at what it would really be like to be INSANE!!!!

This Day Leaves an Indelible Mark

I want to shout out a big fat THANK YOU to Rick!

Not only is he the primary bring-home-the-bacon man as I try to make a go of retail. He helped when I worked about 100 hours a week in a day job & the store to kick this baby off the ground for its first 6 months; he helped when I decided to quit the day job to do this full time.

After working about 50 hours a week for little pay at a non-profit with a 1.5 hour commute, he works another 20 hours in the store. He does the maintenance, the financial analysis, helps with quality control, traded carpentry in exchange for store help and - when I really corner him - he'll do some networking and marketing - when I just can't get my list done.

Hey, what the hell do I do?

But today like a few other times he is a volunteer. Now in York County, PA where he is urging last minute voters to get their asses to the polls as he did at 7 am in order to be on the road in time. Why, because it is so important this day - Nov. 4th 2008. Change I can feel it!

This stupid economy

Wow I thought last year was stressful (ok - shear terror) of stepping into completely new territory just opening Earth Alley. And man, this takes it to another level. You hear people talking about it, the presidential candidates are saying how the economy is hitting small business but, man, to experience it day to day...

So I stepped up my game. I.E., my week - 2 federal building gigs that obtains extra money (for what, not sure, I ask no questions) by charging people like me a small fee to display items in the hopes of a few sales, a new customer or to advertise. It is similar to cold calling - only difference is you get, first-hand rejection, suggestions and sometimes the friendly purchase. I am getting tougher. The last gig I was body searched while going through a security check point with at least 6 guards (who were sweet), nothing compared though to the tough cookie womaning the parking lot, Hand over your keys, pay up & a grin that also said no attitude, all before 8:30 am. Next week is mellow, I think....

1 Year Anniversary Celebration

Well, we did it! One year this past Fri. Lots of mistakes, lots of looooooooooong days, weeks & months like Jan - March when I really thought we weren't going to make it. Several part-time jobs to buy more inventory and countless - 1000s I think - emails, promotions, festivals, discounts, flyers, coupons, articles, reminders!

Chesapeake Sustainable Business Alliance Happy Hour

Last Monday, Earth Alley hosted the Chespeake Sustainable Alliance's monthly happy hour. Over 60 people came - wow - I never knew so many people could fit in this space - well they didn't really. Our great neighbors loaned us their parking space. We had wine from Spoutwood Farm and great treats from Grano's - people looked like they had a great time. I had to take a picture to remember this many people.

Yeah, I am really pissed! It was my goal to be as positive as possible on this blog. AND...It's hot and humid and I've gotten heat stoke twice already and I just came back from Seattle and I really miss it and July sales stinks almost as bad as January and I knew that the first year of business would be hard and I am used to working long, hard multi-tasking hours with little pay (wasn't I in non-profit?) Crap, I don't even have a salary to drown my sorrows in.

All the first year perils that comes with the territory - as I am often reminded.

So what set me off? Some asshole stole a Retreads wallet from the store yesterday - $53 dollars. Because $53 is a lot of money right now. And yet again I am reminded how human I am - how I am sometimes sinking with the sales, inventory, marketing, emails, updates, promotions, networking, budgets, trade shows, self-promotion, part-time jobs and now theft prevention.

In a nutshell, despondency.

Our latest and greatest addition to our inventory is made of something you would never imagine! You might never guess so I'll just come out and say it - made with straw and pooh! Yes, elephant pooh. Beautifully hand-crafted paper that gives a percentage to saving the Asian elephants. I can't remember who first told me about this product but when I called up to order a sample, I had no idea what to expect. Well, I was very pleasantly surprised. In summary, the shit I get into!!!

Wow! What a whirlwind. Thanks to Rick for helping with a number of events: the kick-off in St. Michael's, long ride, lots of gas but what a pretty place to spend a day; then Eco-fest, good to meet like-minded people; Cylburn Market Day - I think the photo says it all - and just when we were done, a special invite from a private corporation - yes, worth it. I couldn't have done it without my friend, Amy, who watched the store. Thank you Amy!

Next round: 3 dates at the Waverly Farmer's Market, Mt. Washington's Wine and Jazz festival in September and the Social Security Admin building. We can do it... We can right? Oh, I forgot Hon and Hampden Fest.

Bay Day in St. Michael's

So what did Rick, Theo and I do Saturday? We participated in eastern shore's eco-fest. The sponsors of the event, the Maritime Bay Museum, were so kind to us. They didn't even laugh at us when we were crawling on our hands and knees looking for a lost jade earring blown over by a gala wind from the amazingly beautiful bay just behind us. Out of a movie this gala wind sent everything from our table flying. Try looking for a dime-sized green earring in blades of grass! Rick was the hero that day when he explored one last time. Jade is supposed to bring luck - we'll see!

We were camped next to Michele and Tony, great folks who own Michele's Granola. If you ever see it in stores buy two bags. You will thank me.

Hey, if this is what we have to do to get out of the store and Baltimore, it's okay by me. A big thanks to Amy, our very friendly and competent friend who held the fort down at Earth Alley on the first really warm day of spring!

The grace of Grace

Why do I forget to be grateful? A sourpuss – that’s me. And, I can see the positive change spring is bringing in me. Yesterday was a great day. I had a cup of java with a new friend, Jill, who I met a while back at Satchidananda Ashram (aka Yogaville) – a peaceful place I sometimes go to when I need to ground myself. And it doesn’t end there. My friend Grace who I met back in the fall when we both had booths at a holiday fair - she was selling great crafts from her native country, Kenya, some of which I sold at Earth Alley. Eight months pregnant she could hardly fit behind the register, Grace came to help wait on customers on Sunday while I was supposed to "catch up" on paperwork. Thanks Grace!

How amazing I feel when I am around people with positive energy. Thanks Jill! Thanks Grace!

Wacky Birdhouses - First Friday Event

Wow, a long time since I wrote. I could have sworn I jotted something down in a late night, one-too many glasses of wine stuper? On a napkin somewhere? Well, I swear to be better. Hell, I’ll swear period.
Last night I had a margarita with a new friend who is editor of a great magazine that is locally produced. She’s cool. It is rare that I can meet someone who can talk as fast as me, understand when I talk faster than I think or at least puts on a good show at pretending to understand my gibberish. We talked about lots of things and some specific ways to get this store looking good for spring – displays, ad, festivals, you name it. I am excited to be excited again! Did we fall into the trap some small business owners face when things are slowing down – ugh I’ll say it out loud – Boredom? Boredom is a state of mind, right?

Style, Baltimore Mag and Urbanite

We are so excited! All 3 magazines are featuring Earth Alley in their fall issues. In October, Baltimore Magazine took a great photo, and in November Style, which already hit newsstands, gave us a great little write-up. Urbanite's November issue will also say something about us. A big KUDOS goes to our local press.

This is great news for us on the heals of over-committing our advertising budget. What will work out? Time will tell as we reach our 8 week mark. I loved the Women's Film festival or their courage and dedication to women's health;...and I would have liked to seen one of its patrons visit Earth Alley. I lied, one came in to say Hi. Ugg...I even donated a bracelet to the cause.

Farewell to an old friend

This picture was taken last September in Discovery Park in Seattle, one of our favorite places. Our beloved dog and old friend, Damascus, passed away on Sunday. Damascus lived a long and happy life; he loved to run, fetch and especially eat! He brought us a lot of joy and love. We are spending time with his buddy, our other dog Theo. Since moving from Seattle six months ago, we have held down two jobs and got Earth Alley going. It has taken countless hours and energy. Now that we are up and running this is a very sad reminder not to work too hard and spend time with those you love. We'd give anything to have Damascus back. If we don't have smiles on our faces like usual, you know why.

Insight from Big Sur

One week before opening, I went on a much needed vacation to sunny, coastal California and had a most amazing experience, most memorably in a hot tub overlooking the beautiful cliffs of Big Sur. With a few new friends, we encouraged Cloris Leachman to join us. She listened to my hopes and my doubts about Earth Alley. Before she kissed me on the cheek she slapped me on the face, I think to knock some sense into me. She said, so you remember what I am about to say, “it is a good idea and you must go for it.” Also, she said to have a water feature and serve wine at your opening with a happy smile. And so I have gone for it – since arriving back last Wed. at 12:30 a.m. I have worked like I have not before. The last 2 days have been a whirl wind.

Verizon is saying that I have to fix the line that they never put in, the alarm guy is saying he can’t finish until Verizon puts in the line. Orders are misplaced or missing. Nonetheless, we are opening on Saturday.

Luckily 2 new creative friends, Allison and Amy, came to help me make sense of the last of the displays. I think they are creative geniuses. I must say, it looks good, like a real store. And just in time for Baltimore Magazine to take some photos tomorrow.

Last Shopping Spree Before Opening Party

Just back from New York at the last trade show before opening. Overspent. Can I come up with a lame excuse to justify it...Yes, of course. There is something about New York; the creativity and thoughtful ideas were amazing: key chains made from bike chains, candles inside Brazilian nuts, purses made from records and stuffed animals that help save the South American rain forest as well as interesting jewelry from Brazil, South Africa and Florida.

In order to celebrate, we are having a party - Sept. 1st, 5 - 7 p.m. Please invite any friends who may be interested in meeting us and previewing items. It is always great to see familiar faces!

New stuff coming in & new challenges everyday

Wow, this is one crazy ride opening a store. Lots of great items are trickling in every week. Let me go on a tangent though - only for a minute. Has anyone worked with local artists? The creativity cannot be matched and the insight - as always I am blown away! BUT I am trying to keep everything "on track" and keep an effecient schedule because it is the only way I will get the store open in time. It is very much the antithesis of the "artistic" temperment. I think 10 emails trying to schedule a meeting is about average. It is almost like living in Seattle again where making a coffee date is like asking for a 50 year committment. I have had conversations at craft markets, flea markets, online and it is hard to get a firm commitment.

So, I am falling short of one of my first goals - to get as many local artists as possible. If any one has insight on how best to work with local artists let me know!! I will keep trying because the creative energy and beauty is so great to be around.

Coming down from a shopping spree

After the crazy exhileration of the past weekend in Atlanta at Amerimart, I am coming down fast, kinda like after a big shopping spree - oh yeah it was a big shopping spree! Unlike coming home from a great shoe sale, I don't have anything to show for it - except for the credit card bill - at least not for another 2 weeks when some of the orders will come in like the simple but beautiful eco-friendly garden pots made from discarded rice husks. What colors did I order, what size again. I want..I want...

Am I really opening an eco-friendly store shopping in an American mall?

It hit me like a ton of bricks. I am really opening my own store when I catapulted myself to shop ol'American style – the BIG Mall way! Imagine 3 Mall of America super-size-me buildings with 18 floors in each all connected by elaborate passageways and a several football field size open space. There were over 5,000 venders selling everything from Peruvian potato ornaments to Middle Eastern rugs worth more than my recently bought store in Hampden. The collateral damages - my first panic attack.

Up until this point, it was all a romantic dream – owning a store - until I went to the biggest trade show on the east coast this past weekend. My task of culling through the 5,0000 or more mini-shops was to seek out, eco-friendly, fair-trade "original" items for my new store in Baltimore, Earth Alley, kinda like if I were to search through the Mall of America for earth-honored items made from local artists. The exception - shoppers from the entire County in a bargain-basement of the century crashing into each other. My idea of fun…Quickly I found the free beer and started pushing my way as well. Not so friendly, eco- or otherwise of me, I know but I did find some great things.
